On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs, and if a night was especially cold, it was a "Three Dog Night".It Ain't Easy is the fourth album by American rock band Three Dog Night, released in 1970 (see 1970 in music). According to lead singer Chuck Negron's book Three Dog Nightmare, the album's working title was The Wizards of Orange, with a cover featuring the band's members apparently posing in the nude. This configuration was never released, although some record clubs advertised a selection entitled The Wizards of Orange."It Ain't Easy" is a song written and originally recorded by Ron Davies. (It is sometimes mistakenly credited to Ray Davies)[citation needed]David Bowie recorded and released this song on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972. The song was originally recorded during the Hunky Dory sessions. The song was also released on the B-Side of the European, US and Japanese re-release of the single "Space Oddity" in December 1972.It was also covered by The Raconteurs for a BBC Radio 2 Session. It was also covered by Five Horse Johnson for their album No. 6 Dance. Three Dog Night had previously performed the song on their 1970 album It Ain't Easy. Other covers include a version by Claudia Lennear who was probably introduced to the song after her meeting with David Bowie during his 1972 USA tour. It appears on her 1974 solo album entitled Phew.

Jul 12, 2008 - This vocal was sung by Danny Hutton, who was the least appreciated of the 3 singers. He had a lovely warm voice. He was also largely responsible for helping Elton John become known in the U.S. when he started out in the early 70's.

Jul 12, 2008 - Yendor61, if I recall correctly, TDN covered this song and then shortly after that, Elton John's version was released.

Aug 16, 2008 - Thanx for the awesome post!! I lost my copy of "Golden Buscuits" which also has this cut. Now I can turn my brothers (who are much younger) on to this version. FYI on Chuck Negron's My Space page his bio says that Elton (in an interview) credited this cut for turning on U.S. fans to his music.
