Shming the African hedgehog plays, swims, and floats. HE is 3 years, 7 months, and 11 days old in this video. DO NOT try this with an inexperienced swimmer. Shming is an excellent swimmer, but you could drown one if you don't know EXACTLY what you're doing! Even the best swimmer should NEVER, EVER be left alone! Do not make rude comments about his weight, as it has already been explained. Many people have asked how they can obtain an African hedgehog. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. They require special care and are very prone to cancer, as well as other diseases, and treatment can become expensive. Their care takes time and much research. Please do your research before you adopt ANY animal. Hedgehogcentral.com is a very good place to start.Hedgehogs are illegal in Arizona, California, Georgia, Maine, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Hawaii, and New York City. Even if you live somewhere I haven't listed, you should still check the laws in your area regarding exotic animals.

ChrisSunHwa Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Shming was the unexpected offspring of a rescue. Most of the good breeders will not ship because it's very stressful for the baby. There are a few that do, but most of them require pickup and may require an application for adoption.

Nov 19, 2008 - what kind of hedgehog is she? :p i really want to buy one after this xD hope i can get one as cute as Shming :3

ChrisSunHwa Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Most domestic hedgehogs are a mix of white belly and Algerian hedgehogs. That's what Shming is:) They are not the same as European hedgehogs.Hedgehog Central has a page somewhere that shows some different kinds (which are all so freaking cute:D) and where they live.

Segerzzang Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - thanks =D i guess ill have to kidnap Shming haha jk xD

StuffedApples Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - The reality is; Hedgehogs aren't that crazy about water. They swim if they have to, But as soon has they fear they are going to drown, They flip on their back to use their quills as a flotation device. (Porcupines can do the same) Also, water is very bad for their skin, It makes their skin dry. If they stay in the water for a long period of time, they will drown. Take it easy with the fellow, I want him to stay around a long time.

AdaliaGlenys Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Are you, by chance, related to Yamazaki from Card Captor Sakura? Seriously, though domesticated hedgies rarely come into contact with water, many of those who have the opportunity enjoy swimming. I don't know much about European hedgehog species, but for African hedgies, floating on their back is a learned behavior that isn't easy to acquire and takes a lot of voluntary practice. It's something they only learn do if they enjoy it.

ChrisSunHwa Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Uh, seriously, you sound like you've never even seen hedgehogs except in pictures.Very few hedgehogs flip on their backs. It's *very* unusual. Now, I can't imagine what porcupines have to do with anything since they are in no way related to hedgehogs. One of the recommended treatments for dry skin is a bath with a few drops of olive oil. This also helps when young hedgehogs are quilling (that means losing baby quills and growing adult ones).

ChrisSunHwa Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Swimming is also a recommended exercise for overweight hedgehogs.Any non-aquatic animal that stays in the water too long could drown, especially if it can't reach the bottom or is left unattended. What that has to do with Shming? Nothing at all. He can reach the bottom and is NEVER left unattendeed. He has a paving stone that he can and does climb onto if he does not want to swim.

ChrisSunHwa Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - By the way, it is very important that their feet are cleaned. If you do not do this they can easily get infection from fecal bacteria. There may not even be anything visible on the feet, but you can't see bacteria. That does not mean it isn't there.
